Costco vs Sam's Club vs BJ's 2026: Best Warehouse Club

Guide details and walkthrough

Why this guide exists in 2026

The three major US warehouse clubs raised membership fees in 2024 and 2025, which made the "is it worth it" calculation more sensitive to how much you actually spend at the club. At the same time, all three expanded their gas station footprints, which shifted the break-even math for households that drive regularly. This guide uses live 2026 pricing checked in May 2026 across the three chains.

Membership tiers in 2026

Costco

  • Gold Star: $65 per year. Standard tier for households.
  • Executive: $130 per year. Includes 2 percent cashback on Costco purchases up to $1,250 per year (so executive becomes cashflow-positive at $3,250 of yearly Costco spending).
  • Business: $65 per year. For businesses, comparable to Gold Star with some category-specific perks.

Sam's Club

  • Club: $50 per year. Standard tier.
  • Plus: $110 per year. Includes 2 percent Sam's Cash on most purchases up to $500 yearly, plus free shipping and curbside pickup.
  • Business: $50 per year. Comparable to Club tier.

BJ's Wholesale

  • Inner Circle: $55 per year. Standard tier.
  • Club Plus: $110 per year. 2 percent cashback up to $500 yearly, plus 5 cents per gallon gas savings on top of club price.

What earns back the fee fastest

Groceries on private label

Kirkland (Costco), Member's Mark (Sam's Club), and Berkley Jensen (BJ's) regularly beat name brand supermarket prices by 15 to 30 percent on equivalent products. The catch: unit sizes are large, and products near expiry can become waste if your household does not consume the volume. Track waste honestly. If 15 percent of what you buy in bulk goes uneaten, the savings rate drops by roughly the same percentage.

Gas

All three clubs operate fuel stations with prices 20 to 45 cents per gallon below regional supermarket and big-box averages. For a household driving 12,000 miles per year in a 25 mpg vehicle (480 gallons), the gas savings alone reach $96 to $216 annually. That covers most of the basic membership fee on gas savings before any grocery spend.

Costco gas stations tend to have the longest lines but the lowest prices. Sam's Club and BJ's stations are competitive on price with shorter waits in most markets.

Pharmacy

The Costco pharmacy in particular has the lowest cash prices for many common generics in the US market, and the prices are public on their website. Even non-members can use the pharmacy in some states. For households on multiple monthly prescriptions, pharmacy savings alone can justify the membership.

Tires and optical

Costco tires often run 10 to 20 percent below independent tire shops for the same brand, with free rotation included for the life of the tire. Optical departments at all three clubs price prescription glasses at a fraction of standalone optical shops. These are infrequent purchases but high-dollar enough to swing the math.

How to actually pick

What we liked

  • Costco wins on private label quality and pharmacy pricing
  • Sam's Club wins on extended hours, Scan and Go, and the lowest base membership
  • BJ's wins on coupon stacking and accepts EBT in most stores

What could be better

  • All three reward bulk buying which can produce waste in small households
  • Membership fees climbed in 2024 and 2025 making break-even less forgiving
  • Gas station lines can erode the per-gallon savings if your time is worth more than $25 per hour

The decision tree most US households should run:

  1. Map the closest stores. If one club is 5 minutes away and the others are 20 plus, the closer one wins regardless of other factors. The convenience cost of a distant warehouse erases savings quickly.
  2. Check gas station overlap. Visit the price boards at the nearest gas station of each club and compare to your regular pump. The annual gas savings is often the single biggest line.
  3. Estimate annual club spending honestly. Pull last year's grocery receipts and identify what would have been club-eligible. $1,500 plus per year in eligible spending justifies any of the three standard memberships.
  4. Pick based on category fit. Heavy meat eaters tend to prefer Costco quality. Coupon clippers prefer BJ's. Households needing long hours and Scan and Go prefer Sam's Club.
  5. Reassess yearly. Membership fees and your spending patterns both drift. The right club this year may not be the right club next year.

The Executive tier math

Costco Executive at $130 versus Gold Star at $65 is the cleanest upgrade math because the 2 percent cashback structure makes the break-even explicit. Executive pays for itself at $3,250 of annual Costco spending. Below that, Gold Star is cheaper net of cashback. Above $3,250, Executive earns money. Most households spending more than $300 per month at Costco hit Executive break-even.

Sam's Club Plus and BJ's Club Plus tiers have similar math but lower cashback caps. Plus is cashflow-positive at roughly $3,000 of annual club spending. The cashback caps at $500 per year so spending above that threshold no longer increases the savings.

What to skip

Online-only club purchases lose most of the warehouse advantage because shipping costs typically offset the bulk-buying discount. The clubs price online competitively with Amazon for non-club prices, but the standout savings live in-store. Use the website to check prices and plan trips, not for everyday delivery.

The "free trial" pitches that some clubs run periodically come with strings attached (auto-renewal at full price, limited departments). Read terms carefully before signing up for a trial if you do not plan to stay.
