Cheapest UK Broadband Deals 2026: No Mid-Contract Hikes

Ofcom banned inflation-linked broadband price rises in 2025. Here is what changed in 2026, which providers really froze prices, and how to find the cheapest honest deal.

Guide details and walkthrough

Why this guide exists

Until January 2025 most UK broadband contracts allowed the provider to raise your monthly bill mid-contract by CPI inflation plus an extra 3.9 percent. In 2023 that worked out at over 14 percent on some households. Customers signing a 24 month deal in autumn could see two separate price rises before the contract ended, and could not exit without penalty.

Ofcom ended that practice. From January 2025 every new contract has to declare mid-contract price rises in pounds and pence, not as a formula linked to inflation. The shift fixed the worst version of the problem but did not stop rises altogether. This guide explains what changed in real terms and which providers genuinely froze prices in 2026.

What the Ofcom rule actually changed

Three concrete changes apply to every UK broadband contract signed after January 2025:

  1. No inflation-linked rises. Providers cannot use CPI, RPI or any other inflation index to set the size of a mid-contract increase.
  2. Pounds and pence disclosure. Any planned rise must be shown as a fixed pound figure at sign-up. A typical 2026 contract states something like "your monthly price will rise by 3 pounds per month in April 2027" rather than the old "CPI plus 3.9 percent".
  3. Right to exit if not disclosed. If a provider tries to raise prices mid-contract without disclosing the increase at sign-up, you can leave penalty-free. Citizens Advice has the dispute process if a provider tries this.

The rule applies to new contracts only. Customers still on pre-2025 deals can be hit by inflation-linked rises until their contract ends, which is one reason many households are switching this year.

The cheapest honest deals in 2026

Prices below reflect introductory rates for new customers as of May 2026. Always confirm on the provider site before signing because rates change weekly.

Standard fibre (30 to 40 Mbps): 20 to 25 pounds per month

For households that mostly stream video, browse and video call, this speed band is plenty. Cheapest fully fixed-price deals in May 2026:

  • Now Broadband Fab Fibre: 23 pounds per month, 12 month contract, fixed price for the full term, 36 Mbps average.
  • Plusnet Fibre 1: 22 pounds per month with a one-off 50 pound bill credit, 24 month contract, price rises by a stated 3 pounds per month in April 2027.
  • Cuckoo 40Mb: 24.99 pounds per month, no mid-contract rise, monthly rolling contract, no exit fees.

Mid-range fibre (60 to 80 Mbps): 25 to 32 pounds per month

The sweet spot for most households. Enough headroom for streaming on multiple devices, occasional 4K, and home working.

  • Vodafone Pro II Fibre 70: 27 pounds per month, 24 month contract, 3 pound mid-contract rise April 2027.
  • EE Fibre 67: 29 pounds per month, 24 month contract, stated mid-contract rise.
  • Hyperoptic Fast 50: 25 pounds per month where available (urban full fibre footprint), no mid-contract rise.

Full fibre 100 Mbps and above: 28 to 40 pounds per month

If your street has full fibre laid (over 70 percent of UK premises by May 2026), these speeds are now mainstream. Worth checking even if you do not feel you need the speed because pricing has dropped close to mid-range fibre.

  • Community Fibre 150Mb (London): 25 pounds per month, fixed.
  • Hyperoptic 150Mb: 28 pounds per month, fixed.
  • Zen Internet Full Fibre 100: 35 pounds per month, no mid-contract rise.

Social tariffs: from 12.50 pounds per month

If anyone in your household claims a qualifying benefit, you can switch to a social tariff at any time without penalty even if you are mid-contract. The cheapest options in 2026:

  • BT Home Essentials: 15 pounds per month for 36 Mbps.
  • Vodafone Essentials Broadband: 12 pounds per month for 38 Mbps.
  • Virgin Media Essential Broadband: 12.50 pounds per month for 15 Mbps.
  • Hyperoptic Fair Fibre 50: 15 pounds per month for 50 Mbps, full fibre where available.

Eligibility is checked once when you sign up. You do not pay back the discount if your circumstances change later in the contract.

What we liked

  • Ofcom 2025 rules end inflation-linked mid-contract price rises
  • Fully fixed-price deals now available from Hyperoptic, Cuckoo, Zen and Now
  • Social tariffs from 12.50 pounds for eligible households

What could be better

  • Big-name providers still raise prices by stated pounds amount mid-contract
  • Fully fixed deals are often slightly more expensive at sign-up
  • Switching is free but only if you are out of contract or eligible for a social tariff

How to switch without paying twice

The One Touch Switch process became mandatory across most UK broadband providers in September 2024. You contact the new provider only; they handle cancellation with your old supplier and synchronise the changeover so you do not pay both at once.

  1. Check your contract end date. Log in to your current provider's account and find the "minimum term ends" date. If you are out of contract, you can switch any day with no fee.
  2. Run a postcode check on three or four providers including at least one fully fixed-price option (Hyperoptic, Cuckoo, Now, Zen).
  3. Compare like for like. Add the mid-contract rise to the advertised price to get the real average monthly cost over the contract. A 22 pound deal with a 3 pound rise in month 13 averages 23.50 pounds over 24 months.
  4. Sign up with the new provider only. They contact your old supplier through One Touch Switch and confirm a single switch date.
  5. Keep an eye on the first three bills. Most billing errors appear in the first two billing cycles. Disputes are easier to resolve early.

Quick answers to common questions

Will my broadband bill go up in April 2027?

If your contract was signed after January 2025 and lists a planned mid-contract rise, yes, by the stated pounds amount. If your contract predates the Ofcom rule change, you may still face an inflation-linked rise. Check your sign-up confirmation email; the rise must be disclosed.

Is full fibre worth the upgrade?

If your premises has it, usually yes. Full fibre pricing in 2026 is close to standard fibre for entry tiers, and reliability is noticeably better. Use the Openreach or Ofcom checker to confirm availability at your address.

What about Virgin Media's price rises?

Virgin Media moved to pounds and pence disclosure in 2025 alongside the rest of the market. Their stated mid-contract rise for new customers signing in 2026 is typically 3.50 pounds per month in April 2027. Existing customers on pre-2025 contracts may still be on CPI-linked rises until their contract ends.

How do I know if I qualify for a social tariff?

If anyone in your household receives Universal Credit, Pension Credit, ESA, Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or PIP, you qualify with at least one provider. Citizens Advice has a free checker. Eligibility is verified by the provider once at sign-up through a direct check with DWP.

The honest summary

The Ofcom rule change did not abolish broadband price rises, but it abolished the worst version: surprise inflation-linked hikes mid contract. In 2026 you can compare two deals by adding the disclosed pounds rise to the headline price and judging the real average monthly cost.

For households that want zero surprises, a fully fixed-price deal with Hyperoptic, Cuckoo, Now Broadband or Zen Internet is the safest option. For mainstream providers, the pounds-and-pence rise is small enough that the introductory discount usually still wins on total cost. Anyone on a qualifying benefit should switch to a social tariff straight away; the savings are immediate and not penalised by contract terms.
